Springfield's Rich Heritage and the Microbrand Watch Industry

Springfield, Illinois, renowned for its deep historical roots and as the longtime home of Abraham Lincoln, boasts numerous landmarks and museums dedicated to the 16th President. Additionally, Springfield is celebrated for its contributions to the watchmaking industry, notably through the Illinois Watch Company, established in 1869. This company played a pivotal role in American watchmaking, employing over 1,200 workers at its peak and producing millions of high-quality timepieces.

Moreover, Springfield is home to the Sangamon Watch Co. retail shop, the only microbrand watch company on the entire Old Route 66. Each year, it attracts hundreds of international and domestic tourists, enhancing Springfield's reputation as a hub for watch enthusiasts and contributing to the local economy.

In recent years, the tradition of watchmaking has been revitalized through the rise of microbrand watches. These independent brands, often characterized by their innovation, creativity, and direct-to-consumer sales models, have garnered a dedicated following. Illinois hosts nearly 10 microbrand and independent watch companies, many in the Midwest. The American watch market generated approximately $5.7 billion in sales in 2023 and is projected to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 4.3% over the next five years, reaching an estimated $7 billion by 2028.

By hosting such an event, Springfield can leverage its historical significance and emerging watchmaking renaissance to become a central hub for microbrand watch enthusiasts, contributing to the projected growth of the American watch industry. This initiative will not only honor the city's legacy but also position it as a future leader in the evolving landscape of American watchmaking. Join Us at the Watch Wonders of the Midwest 2025
